Located at an altitude of approximately 3,100 metres above sea level, Dochula Pass is one of Bhutan’s most scenic mountain viewpoints. Surrounded by forested hills and colourful prayer flags, the pass offers a peaceful place to pause during the journey from Thimphu to Punakha.

On clear days, visitors can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Mist and changing mountain weather can create an equally atmospheric setting, adding to the beauty of this remarkable landscape.

Take time to enjoy the fresh mountain air, capture photographs and appreciate the spiritual atmosphere of this high-altitude destination.

2. Druk Wangyal Chortens

Duration: Approximately 30–45 minutes

At Dochula Pass, discover the remarkable collection of 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, arranged across the hillside as a striking expression of Bhutanese Buddhist devotion.

Commissioned by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the chortens commemorate Bhutanese military personnel and the events associated with the 2003 military operation in southern Bhutan. They also stand as sacred monuments reflecting remembrance, peace and spiritual merit.

The whitewashed structures, surrounded by prayer flags and mountain scenery, create one of the most distinctive sights along Bhutan’s central highway.

Visitors can walk around the complex, admire its architecture and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of this important cultural landmark.

3. Chimi Lhakhang – The Temple of Fertility

Duration: Approximately 1–1.5 hours

Continue towards the village of Sopsokha in the Punakha region to visit Chimi Lhakhang, widely known as Bhutan’s Fertility Temple.

Traditionally associated with Lama Drukpa Kunley, popularly called the Divine Madman, the temple reflects a distinctive chapter of Bhutanese Buddhist history. Drukpa Kunley was renowned for his unconventional teaching methods, humour and challenge to rigid social conventions.

The temple is traditionally dated to 1499 and is associated with Ngawang Choegyel, a prominent Drukpa Kagyu religious figure.

To reach the temple, enjoy a gentle walk through the countryside, passing terraced rice fields, traditional farmhouses and the picturesque village of Sopsokha. The walk provides an opportunity to appreciate rural Bhutanese life and the agricultural landscapes of the valley.

Pilgrims from Bhutan and abroad visit Chimi Lhakhang to seek blessings associated with fertility, family well-being and good fortune. The temple remains an important religious destination and a fascinating place to learn about local beliefs and traditions.

Please dress respectfully when entering the temple and follow the guidance of your local guide.

Pause along the bridge to take photographs and enjoy the scenery. It is an excellent opportunity to appreciate the natural landscape that has made Punakha one of Bhutan’s most attractive destinations.

Note: Bridge access and conditions may vary. Follow local safety guidance, especially during periods of strong winds or high river levels.

5. Punakha Dzong – The Palace of Great Happiness

Duration: Approximately 1–2 hours

Conclude your sightseeing with a visit to Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and historically significant fortresses.

Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong was constructed in 1637–1638 under the direction of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the religious and political leader who played a decisive role in unifying Bhutan.

Its impressive whitewashed walls, traditional wooden bridges, elaborate carvings and richly decorated interiors reflect the finest features of Bhutanese architecture.

Punakha Dzong has witnessed important events in the country’s history. It was associated with the establishment of Bhutan’s traditional system of governance and hosted the coronation of Ugyen Wangchuck as the first hereditary King in 1907.

Over the centuries, the fortress endured fires, floods and an earthquake. Restoration efforts, including major works undertaken during the reign of the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, helped preserve this remarkable landmark for future generations.

Today, Punakha Dzong serves as the winter residence of the central monastic body, led by the Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s chief abbot. It remains an important centre of religious ceremonies and national celebrations.

As you explore its courtyards and sacred halls, admire the intricate woodwork, traditional paintings and craftsmanship that express Bhutan’s rich spiritual heritage.

Punakha Dzong is more than an architectural masterpiece: it is a living symbol of the country’s history, faith and national identity.

End of the Day
