What Are Tshechus?

Tshechus are religious festivals held annually in monasteries, temples, and Dzongs across Bhutan. The word “Tshechu” translates to the “tenth day”, commemorating the birth anniversary of Guru Rinpoche. These festivals often span several days and feature sacred dances known as Cham dances, performed by monks and trained laymen dressed in elaborate costumes and colourful masks.

The dances are believed to bless spectators, cleanse negative karma, and promote spiritual wellbeing. Many Bhutanese people travel long distances to attend these important occasions with family and friends.

Paro Tshechu

Immediately following the Drubchen, the Punakha Tshechu continues with sacred dances and religious ceremonies.

Jambay Lhakhang Drup

Celebrated in Bumthang, the Jambay Lhakhang Drup is known for distinctive rituals and ancient traditions. One of its most recognised events is the Mewang, or fire blessing ceremony, believed to purify participants and ward off negativity.
