Your flight into Paro is a journey in itself. As you cross the mighty Himalayas, gaze upon sacred peaks such as Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. From Kathmandu, you might even spot the world’s highest summits—Everest and Kanchenjunga—gleaming in the distance.

Upon landing, our representative will welcome you to Bhutan. Begin with a visit to Paro Dzong (1646), a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture, followed by the National Museum, once a watchtower, now home to priceless thangkas, statues, and ancient artifacts. Continue to Kichu Lhakhang, Bhutan’s oldest temple, before driving to Thimphu, the world’s only capital city without traffic lights, where a lone policeman directs vehicles with graceful hand gestures. Spend the day immersed in Thimphu’s cultural treasures. Visit the National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha Lhakhang (a 12th-century temple), and Drubthob Monastery, home to the Zilukha Nunnery. Explore the School of Arts and Crafts, where students master Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, and the National Library, which houses scriptures dating back to the 8th century. At the Traditional Paper Factory, watch the age-old process of handmade paper, then step inside the Folk Heritage Museum, a preserved medieval farmhouse that offers a glimpse into rural life. Drive over the Dochula Pass (3,100 m), where 108 memorial chortens stand against the Himalayan skyline. On a clear day, the snow-clad giants of Bhutan tower on the horizon. Descend into the subtropical Punakha Valley, once the nation’s winter capital. Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong (1637), known as the “Palace of Great Happiness”, at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. In the afternoon, walk through fields to Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley, fondly called the Divine Madman. Overnight in Punakha.

Begin with a short hike through rice terraces to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, an intricately painted stupa built by the Queen Mother. Return to Thimphu for a final stroll through handicraft shops, then travel back to Paro, visiting Semtokha Dzong (1627), the oldest fortress in Bhutan, en route. Overnight in Paro.

Today’s highlight is a pilgrimage to Taktsang Monastery, Bhutan’s most famous landmark. The hike begins at the base of a pine forest and winds upward for two hours until the monastery comes into view, seemingly suspended in mid-air 900 m above the Paro Valley floor. Legend tells of Guru Rinpoche flying here on the back of a tigress in the 8th century to meditate, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. After your descent, visit Drukgyel Dzong, framed by the snow-draped Mount Jomolhari, and explore Paro’s charming town. Overnight in Paro.
